Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, SpokaneSpokaneman is back! I know you’ve missed me and I’m sorry about slacking lately on informing you of Spokane’s great things to do. But I’ve got a great one for you. A peace offering of sorts! Recently I had the opportunity to get an exclusive tour of the newly renovated Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, formerly the Fox Theater, located at W. 1001 Sprague Ave. All I can say is “Wow!” When the Fox officially opens later this month I encourage each and every one of you to take whatever measures necessary to check out this historic Spokane attraction.

Originally opened in 1931, the Fox Theater instantly became one of Spokane’s grandest buildings. As the largest theater in Spokane offering over 2,300 seats the Fox attracted national and international talent including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Katharine Hepburn, the Spokane Symphony, Vladimir Horowitz, Will Rogers and the Boloshoi Ballet. Despite being the “Place to go” for many years the theater began to decline and in 2000 was in line to be demolished. Seeing an opportunity to preserve history, the Spokane Symphony began a campaign to save the theater. The efforts were successful and in 2005 the $31 million renovation began.

That was then, this is now. The Fox is now listed on the Spokane Register, the National Register of Historic Places and the Washington Heritage Register and has every right to be. The Fox was designed using a modernistic and exuberant art-deco style which emphasizes and exaggerates natural settings. The restoration has removed years of smoke, grease and dirt damage to restore the Fox to its original splendor. In the auditorium, beautiful murals representing the earth progress from underwater themes, to landscapes, to rivers and clouds and finally to an exquisite 60-foot wide sunburst that dominates the auditorium and inspires awe. The attention to detail during the restoration is evident as all original artwork has been kept in place. Now seating only 1,700 patrons, the theater features colors that contrast wonderfully with each other. From light browns and pinks to greens and dark blues, the colors themselves are an artistic experience that will only be outdone by the performance you choose to see. Important note: The seats are spacious and very comfortable! Now the official home of the Spokane Symphony, the Fox will also feature such performers as Tony Bennet, Too Slim & the Taildraggers and Thomas Hampson within the first few months of being open. A bar will also provide patrons with wine, beer and delightful snacks that will be allowed into the theater. A trip to the Fox will allow you to experience Spokane history, eclectic art and amazing music all in one easy trip.

Located in the heart of downtown Spokane, the Fox is surrounded by plenty of fun attractions including dining, shopping, sports and the arts. Due to the plethora of activities around the Fox, there is unfortunately a serious lack of parking. Bring the whole family, everyone is sure to find something to enjoy. Ticket prices will vary depending on the event.
