“It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness”, especially on these shorter days of autumn. There’s no better way to brighten up a room or glum mood than with the warm glow and wonderful fragrance from candles. As a bit of a candle junkie (and snob), some of the best candles that I have found are right here in town at the Blue Heron Soy Candle Company located at 3928 Post St., Spokane, WA in the Garland District. The owner, Pamela Welch, makes all of her candles right there at the shop, creating wonderful fragrance combinations that are sure to please even the most sensitive noses. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually enjoyed some of the scents that I had elsewhere learned to avoid due to them being overpowering.

As well as pleasing the olfactories, these candles are 100% soy, which makes them healthier to burn in your home as they do not contain the harmful residues that paraffin candles produce. They burn down almost completely so no worries about that dreaded half candle stub that you get with some lesser quality paraffin candles.

Besides have an incredible supply of candles in all sizes and fragrances, Blue Heron has a wonderful variety of candle holders and ready-to-give gift items in all price ranges. When I was in there last week, I was enjoying my own little shopping spree, thanks to a gift certificate that was given to me on my birthday. I was like a kid in a candy store! Pamela was so very helpful, not only in helping me find what I needed, but in giving me the space to look/sniff around. It’s the perfect place to find a unique offering to your holiday hostess or to dress up your own home any time of year.

At this time, the store is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11am - 6pm, but she is often there at other times doing production and can possibly accomodate your visit if you happen to be in the area at times other than the listed store hours. More information about Blue Heron itself, as well as fundraising opportunities can be found at www.blueheronsoycandles.com . As I write, the aromatic scent of Autumn Spice (one of my spree purchases) fills the room with subtle fragrance and a warm glow… it doesn’t get any better than this!
