Strawberry Picking on Greenbluff

by Sweyo on 07/10/08 at 12:32 pm

This morning we headed up to Greenbluff to go strawberry picking with some friends. We agreed to meet up at Knapp’s farm, located at 7722 E. Ballard Road (the west side of Greenbluff). For a map to their farm and further information please visit their website at http://www.knappsongreenbluff.com. Once we arrived we were greeted by a friendly staff and directed where to wait for a ride out for to the strawberry patch.

We waited for a ride on the golf cart to take us to the field. The nice thing was there were also rooms for strollers and backpacks on the carts. However, if you did not want to ride the cart, it was probably only 200 yards to the closest patch.

Once we were dropped off at the strawberry patch we were given directions and left to pick until our hearts content. The biggest problem I encountered was trying to teach my son the difference between a ripe strawberry and a non-ripe strawberry. He enjoyed picking the white strawberries more than the red strawberries. I finally convinced him that Elmo wanted him to pick the red ones and we were then set.

I love strawberries, but I have never been able to get my son to eat them. However, something about taking a kid to the farm prompts then to want to eat. My son ended up eating more strawberries then he picked. I tasted one or two and they were by far some of the sweetest strawberries I had eaten in awhile. I was worried that because of the hot weather the berries would be small, but Knapp’s berries were large and plump like I am used to.

After picking for about a half an hour we had more than enough berries and headed back to the where we had come in. The golf cart came and picked us up and dropped us off by the parking lot where we could pay for our fruit. I only spent $4 as the berries are currently running $0.99 a pound.

Near the fruit stand there is lots of shade and picnic tables so we spread out and had a picnic lunch before we headed home. There were also a row of outhouses available, if needed.

Strawberry picking is in full swing on Greenbluff for another week or so, so be sure to head up soon to get your berries. Knapp’s is open 7-7 most days, but check with them before heading up. To find out what other farms are picking berries, visit http://www.greenbluffgrowers.com.
