An Afternoon Walk in Riverfront Park in Downtown Spokane

Clock TowerWhen the weather is pleasant and not too hot, Riverfront Park is a great place to go for a walk, enjoy the scenery and have some fun. Some friends and I recently went for a stroll in the park on a Sunday afternoon. We were actually trying to simultaneously pass time and enjoy the weather and our walk did just that. We started our walk near the carousel and new fountain. We made our way northward across the bridge that crossed the Spokane River. Standing on the bridge facing up the river gave us a beautiful view of the park’s famous clock tower. Also located on the bridge on that day was a place that rented out bikes for people to use to explore the park. Biking would be a fun way to explore the whole park without wearing yourself out.

The walking path is nice and wide with wonderful landscaping all around. Just on the other side of the bridge is a small stand shaped like a Sno-cone that sells, you guessed it- Sno-cones! They have over 30 flavors available so your imagination is the limit if you want to enjoy one of those icy snacks.

Continuing North on the path brought us to a grassy field that gave us another nice view of the river. There was a very skilled gentleman playing hackey-sack that we got to sit and watch. This grassy field would be a great place to have a picnic or just sit down and read a book or people watch.

Even further North we found the fun area of the park- the rides. The park has many classic amusement rides like a Ferris Wheel, the Scrambler and the Tilt-a-Whirl. Had I not just eaten a huge meal prior to our walk, I would have wanted to hop on one! On a Sunday afternoon, the lines were surprisingly not very long!

Beyond the outdoor rides was an indoor area that had a few arcade games and a café where people can buy ice cream. There are also public restrooms available here.

This is where we ended our walk that day (before we went back the way we came). Our pleasant walk didn’t cost us any money that day because we were just observing the sights around us. But there are plenty of opportunities to spend money and have fun. Riverfront Park is located in Downtown Spokane right off of Spokane Falls Blvd. You can view their various attractions and prices at their website: www.spokaneriverfrontpark.com.
