An Afternoon of Frolf on the Whitworth Campus

John displays our disks I had been avoiding Frolf for over a year. Every time I was invited I had a sound enough excuse to fool even myself. Competitive by nature (“Amy, it’s just a game!” never carried much weight with me.) I struggle with games and sports where I can’t run off my frustration. Tennis, put-put, ping pong, and, sadly, Frolf. Still lots of people like it, so I think it’s worth mentioning.

Frolf is a clever combination of the words Frisbee and golf. It is not the same as Disc Golf because fancy disc golf discs are not used. In the poor college kid, I have six square feet of dorm room space, version of disc golf players grab their most expendable Frisbee and aim for agreed upon objects. The Whitworth University campus on Hawthorne between Division and Waikiki provides an excellent location for this activity. There are a multitude of unmarked courses, which I will not trace out for you because that would be too difficult, and I don’t positively remember any one. About a week ago I had to give in to a friendly game of Frolf.

Facility Services at Whitworth is hard at work keeping the grounds beautiful. Trees, flowers, grass, the works. Why not take advantage of their hard work and play a little Frolf? Good arbitrary holes to set for your party include flag poles, fire hydrants, the large library front statue lovingly called “the big ugly” and of course a multitude of trees and lamp posts. The college is obsessed with lampposts.

I enjoyed myself much better when my score got to double digits and I decided to stop counting. I used my trusty “Fat Tire Flyer” Frisbee, a present once upon a time from my mom, and I managed not to damage it badly (or “taco” it as we like to say) by chucking it into nearby things. I only flopped to the ground in frustration once and was sour only briefly. Frolf is a good and free activity for nearly everyone. I’m sure I will play again, but I think in general I will stick to Ultimate and basketball.
