Dancing the Night Away for Seniors-Inland Northwest

My birthday at the dance August 11th, 2008

My husband AJ and I are officially Senior Citizens. On August 11th I turned 59. I love to dance and we had not been dancing for a very long time. I wanted to go dancing so did an Internet search and found several of the Senior Citizen centers in Spokane, Post Falls and Couer d’ Alene have a dance sometime during the week. One dance was on my birthday Monday night August 11th at the Corbin Senior Center located in Northwest Spokane at 827 W. Cleveland Ave.

Friends Jimmie and Marian at our table

I told my husband I would like to go and he agreed. We invited our friends Jimmie and Marian Warren to go with us that evening. The cost was $7.00 per couple and a donation if you wanted a light late evening supper of about $1.00 so the total cost was $9.00. We arrived at 7:30 about a half hour after the dance began.

That night was wear your favorite T-Shirt night. We had all worn our favorite t-shirt. When we paid for the dance we were given four tickets for a drawing later in the evening and learned this was something they have every Monday evening.

The Corbin Senior Center has a band every Monday evening for dancing the dance begins at 7:00 p.m and ends at 10:00 p.m. There is a break for prize drawings and a light supper for those who wish to eat.

 Uncle Harolds Band

Beverages of soda, tea or coffee are there all evening for any who wish to sit and just watch the dancing and visit with others. The music was by a Uncle Harold’s Band. Most of the music was from the 1940’s but some was early 1950’s. I had emailed Lora one of the Center’s regulars and co-ordinator of the dances and told her my husband had planned to attend and it was my birthday.

To my surprise she had bought a small birthday cake to present to me. She called me up and introduced me and my husband and our friends, all new comers, to the Senior Corbin center and the group all sang happy birthday to me. We met Lora, Lilly, Betty, Craig and Walt that evening. Walt was the oldest Senior Citizen there age 91 and he attends two dances per week and is very healthy and spry for his age. He said “dancing keeps me fit and healthy”. Craig age 55 was the youngest senior citizen attending Monday evening.

They then had a drawing for prizes. My friend Marian won a prize and selected a box of variety chips. We danced several dances on the large floor and met other couples. It was a lot of fun. We chose not to eat a light dinner that night at the senior center as our friends Jimmie and Marian wanted to take me out to Shari’s for a late night dinner.

After the dance ended at 10:00 we went to Shari’s and enjoyed visiting and a good meal. My birthday was a lot of fun with my good friend from Malden, Washington driving up to visit earlier in the day, my kids all called to wish me a happy birthday or came to see me before we left for the dance. I had a great time on my 59th birthday all week long.

We learned there would be another dance at the Lincoln Senior Center Thursday evening August 14th and were invited to attend that dance as well. My husband and I attended the Lincoln Senior Citizen dance on Thursday and had a terrific time. We met Mary and John and Laura and Lawrie and Sandy that evening. John and Mary were our age. At the Lincoln Senior Center my husband AJ and I and John and Mary were the two youngest couples attending. John and Mary age 58 and 59 had been going almost every week for two months. Both evenings there were over thirty couples attending from 55 through 95 and all danced. There was a variety of music some fast and some slow.

The Lincoln Senior Center is located at 3151 E 27th street and is a newer facility. We plan to attend the dances at least twice a month from now on. It was fun and not overly late nor expensive. If any of you young senior citizens want to get out for a good time, meet new people and kick up your heels a little check out the senior citizen centers near you and find out which centers and nights they have dancing or other senior events.

Lora at the Corbin Center told me they are hoping a lot of us younger seniors start to attend and promised that some of the bands are learning to play some music from the 50’s and 60’s rock and roll. They are looking forward to meeting more “Baby Boomers”. We were also informed anyone is welcome to attend the dances age 18 and up and they would like to see younger faces attend. The side benefits are you make new friends, learn of other events to attend you get to have a good work out and if you want incentive to lose weight this is a good and fun way to do it.

If your 18 or older and don’t mind getting out for an evening and co-mingling with us older folks who like to have fun to come join us at any of the senior centers for an evening of dancing, fun and food.
