Warm up with soup and a sandwich at The Sourdough Place

Store front on N. Division

Store front on N. Division

When you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, there are only two things that help. The first is more sleep. The second is more soup. There’s nothing quite like a bowl of soup to warm up your tummy and give you the energy to get through your day. One place I like to visit is The Sourdough Place at 821 N. Division.

I like The Sourdough Place because it’s close to work, and it makes afternoon snacks such as soups, salads and sandwiches. I recently went there with my mom before an afternoon of shopping and errands. And let me tell you, when my mom and I get together for trips to Costco, Walmart, thrift stores and the mall, soup is just about the only thing that fills us up (and calms us) before a busy afternoon. Downtown Spokane Houses Many Incredible Sculptures from Local Artists

Taking a small stroll down Riverside St. and Main St. in downtown Spokane, I realized just how blessed this city is with sculpture artists. In just a short distance, there are so many incredible works that are both fascinating and inspiring. The sculptures range from being half the size of an average person, to as monumental as a building. Each one contains its own story and purpose. Whether abstract or naturalist, all of these pieces can make one appreciate our surrounds and region a little bit more.

The Aluminum Fountain, sculpted by George Tsutakawa, on the corner of Riverside and Washington is intriguing on its own, with is flat side and upward curves, but when it starts to sprout water, the true beauty of the piece is relieved. Streams of water pour out from all 6 spouts (3 on each side) and give the sculpture the reverse curves and balances the entire piece out. I always love to see different community member dipping their feet into this fountain on a hot summer day. Now of course, with the weather and time of year, you won’t see the water running out of the fountain. But even without the water, Aluminum Fountain offers a piece of work to be appreciated. Ice Skating at Riverfront Park’s Ice Palace

I was born in Sacramento, California, so I am still am not really adapted to the idea of the cold environment and snow. However, whenI moved here with my family, my Mom was constantly looking for fun things for us kids to do to distract us from the loneliness we felt from leaving our friends behind in California. My Mom saw an ad in the newspaper showing the Riverfront Park Ice Palace. So, my entire family went to the Ice Palace that night and we had a great time. From then on, I became addicted to ice skating. I took lessons and everything…and I actually wasn’t too bad (which was very surprising, considering how uncoordinated I am). However, once the winter was over, and school started up again, we stopped going and I kind of forgot about ice skating altogether……. Read the rest of Ice Skating at Riverfront Park’s Ice Palace »

Experience Milford’s and their Amazing Seafood

With time scares and budgets tight, it isn’t often my boyfriend and I get to take ourselves out to a “fancy” restaurant for some high quality food and ambience. The other night we decided to go ahead and go against our best judgment and take the night to out to eat a great meal. Always ready for a new adventure, I voted for us going someplace we’ve never gone before. I’m a sucker for seafood, and I was definitely hungry for it, so I opted that we check out Milford’s, a seafood house restraint located at 719 N. Monroe St. I’ve driven past it on my daily commute several times, but hadn’t thought of it before as a possible place to eat until recently. I checked it out on its online website (www.milfordsspokane.com), and looked through a few online reviews. Everything was positive, and from the pictures online it looked like a beautiful place. But even those pictures didn’t give the place justice compared to what it actually was. Read the rest of Experience Milford’s and their Amazing Seafood »

Gather around Chili’s Bottomless Express Lunch

Excited for lunch

Excited for lunch

Any restaurant goer will tell you that lunch menus are always cheaper and sometimes better than dinner menus. For this reason alone, my friends and I are steadfast lunchtime diners. Now that the holidays are over, catching up over lunch about events past and the coming New Year is a wonderful way to bread up an otherwise tedious afternoon. One of our favorite places to go is Chili’s.

At its best, Chili’s is a consistently good restaurant. It doesn’t matter how many times your order a dish, it’s going to be just as delightful and taste the same as the first time you ordered it. Because of this, Chili’s is kind of my go to restaurant. The place that’s decided upon when we need food, don’t feel like cooking, and don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a restaurant we might not enjoy. Revamp your New Year wardrobe at Drop Your Drawers

A collection of vintage coats
A collection of vintage coats

Have you ever walked into a room where everyone seems to be wearing the same thing? The mass of people move about making a grayish, brownish, black blur. When, out of the corner of your eye you spot it. Color! Alas, amongst the crowd comes a girl in a bright red dress. Well that girl is me; and chances are, I bought that obnoxiously bright dress at a thrift store. So this year, I decided to bring in the new year with a new, or I mean vintage, wardrobe.

Over the years I’ve developed my unapologetic, individualistic sense of style from my mother. The only difference between her wardrobe and mine is that she’s stuck in the 1980’s and I like to fall somewhere within the 1940’s to 1960’s eras.

Needless to say, it can be difficult to find vintage clothing, especially in Spokane. Larger cities the likes of Seattle and San Diego have hundreds of vintage stores, just waiting to be ransacked (preferably by me). But in Spokane I’ve only found a few. Where’s the one place a hippy, a drag queen and a person looking for a Halloween costume can find a wardrobe? The answer is Drop Your Drawers, located at 716 West Garland Avenue. Open from 11-7p.m. this second hand clothing store is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Read the rest of Revamp your New Year wardrobe at Drop Your Drawers »

Do you ever have that Christmas present that just haunts you? The present you sought after, desperately meant to buy for the right person, but just couldn’t find it? Well I have one such present, and until recently it hung above my head like a dark cloud.

Throughout the entire Christmas season I looked for a Jimi Hendrix, vinyl album. As a present for my boyfriend I wanted to find something special, and let me tell you, there is not other sound that compares to a vinyl record, and there is no other way to enjoy the art of an album cover quite like that of a record sleeve.

So, on a desperate pursuit, I went to find a record for my boyfriend. The trouble is, records are rare and can me few and far in between. But most of all, Hendrix is amazing and the music fly’s of the shelves like hot cakes. Read the rest of Find the music you’re looking for at 4000 Holes »

In Awe of Our Winter Wonderland

Spokane is now a city of constant national news coverage. The severe weather conditions we have been dealing with have broken records made as far back as we started recording records. The amount of snow we have accumulated in such a short period of time has been very difficult to deal with, and rarely have I heard any conversation without it as the main subject. With as many negatives as there are associated with the weather, I’ve been trying my hardest to seek out the positives of living amongst the nation’s currently greatest city of winter wonder. Spin the Birthday Wheel at Fast Eddies Pub

Curb side view of Fast Eddies

It’s amazing how many people I know with winter birthdays. In December alone I know upwards of six people with holiday birthdays. As far as January is concerned, I’m not even counting anymore. I’ve lost track. Thankfully, there’s a place in Spokane where birthdays are welcome.

Among my group of friends there are certain late night traditions, and spinning the birthday wheel at Fast Eddies, is one of them. Located at 1 West Spokane Falls Blvd, the pub is truly the perfect spot to start out or finish a night of celebrating a birthday (persons aged twenty one or older).
