Over several years my grandmother and I have built a tradition of going out to lunch at Molly’s Family Restaurant. After eating at several other downtown restaurants during the noon-time of the day, we concluded that Molly’s would be our place to chow. And chow we do‚Äîconsidering the large portions the restaurant serves with each meal. Mostly though, our reasoning consists of Molly’s being a very relaxed, homey kind of place. Several of the waitresses recognize us by now, even calling us by our first names. The place isn’t too loud and “happening” nor is it to subtle and somber. It’s just perfect for our occasional catch-up lunch and casual conversation. Read the rest of It’s Tradition to Chow Down at Molly’s »
This week one of the season’s best basketball games took place. I am talking about the Washington State Cougars and the Gonzaga Bulldogs (ranked 4th in the Nation). After grabbing some blankets in case of bad roads, we headed south on I-95 for Pullman, Washington to watch the game in Beasley Colesium. We arrived a few minutes before game time and after parking (a good 6 block away) we walked into Beasley to thousands of fans cheering for the Cougars. A few of my old roommates and I decided that we needed something fun‚Äîand cheap‚Äî to do. Maybe something that could turn into a tradition and that could include a lot of people if we needed it to. We decided to go all out and have a “game night” at their house on a Wednesday night. We kept the snacks inexpensive. A couple of bags of chips, some salsa, and a few bottles of generic brand soda. We all gathered around in the living room in comfy lounge clothes. No need to dress up for this fun night. We had all agreed to bring at least a couple of games from home. I didn’t have any that seemed too appealing to me at the time, so I went ahead and stopped by Uncle’s Puzzles and Games before I arrived. I ended up buy several more games than just a couple, and they were the highlight of the evening. Read the rest of Uncle’s Provides for a Fun Game Night Among Friends »
After a busy day at work, I received avoicemail from my boyfriend. He told me to go home and get dressed up because he was going to take me out to a nice dinner. He didn’t give me any details, but told me he would be picking me up at 7:30 pm. So, I quickly rushed home and got all dolled up.
At 7:30, my boyfriend arrived. However, he was not in his usual white crappy car. He had rented a limo and presented me with a dozen of the most beautiful pink roses I had ever seen! I was completely surprised!! We then drove in the limo to the Steamplant Grill. I had been here before but it had been quite some time. I’m somewhat of a news junkie. I try to read the paper, search the web, and read blogs to stay up to date on what’s going on world-wide and in Spokane. Recently I found the most pleasant surprise from a newspaper. Tucked inside a copy of “The Inlander” was a little advertisement, in tiny print. The advertisement was a coupon for free ice skating, Thursday night’s only at Riverfront Park, courtesy of the Inlander.
Now I hope you’re as excited as I was when I read it. Free ice skating: what a perfect holiday adventure! So with coupons in hand, I drug my friend Sammy to Riverfront Park and the Ice Palace. Before I begin there are a few disclaimers. First, you must have the coupon, “Inlander Appreciation Night” on hand to receive the discount. Second, the discount is only good Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m. Lastly, the coupon only covers the $4.25 admission fee. If you need to rent ice skates, the charge is still $3.00. The city of Spokane loves a reason to decorate. And no reason, or excuse, seems to hold up better than the Christmas holiday season. Any commute I have to make after dark is so much more enjoyable as I watch more and more homes participate in the festive activity of lighting up their residence. It’s exciting to see just how elaborate some of these homes can get. As I observe the progression I can’t help but wander off of my daily route to venture further into areas of the city I don’t usually drive through, just to make sure I’m getting a full fill of what it is capable of showing off. No longer is driving around when it’s dark outside a dismal activity. Now that Christmas lights are up everywhere I go, every night is a new adventure. Despite the lack of snow, there is a feeling of Christmas in the air. I don’t mean a feeling of black Friday shopping and discount holiday prices. I mean a feeling of love and warmth and wonder that so secretly blankets the holiday season. So, in light of the holidays and in light of making the very most of my holiday season, I attended the 3rd Annual Bing Crosby Holiday Film Festival.
First things first, I had no idea that Bing Crosby, one of Hollywood’s biggest musical and film starts of the 1930s, 1940’s and 1950’s grew up in Spokane and briefly attended Gonzaga University. When I say biggest star, I mean he scored more No. 1 hits that both the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Read the rest of Bing Crosby Holiday Film Festival »

Bright neon sign
This year’s Thanksgiving was going to be very sad for me. I had to work late into the evening, so it looked as though I was going to have to miss it this year. I was feeling very sorry for myself; it was to be the very first time I was going to be skipping the “feastive” holiday. My boyfriend decided to try to make it up to me by taking me out to dinner the night before the big day. Knowing how much I heart seafood, he took me to Brooklyn’s at the Northpoint Shopping center. Seeing their “Fresh Seafood Daily” sign on the outside of the joint, I was instantly excited. “Let order lots and lots of food!” I exclaimed. And we did. We started with an appetizer, ordered large, full portions of our meals, and followed with hearty desserts. Granted, we had to take a lot of food home in to-go boxes, but nonetheless, it certainly was a feast to be thankful for. Read the rest of Dining at Brooklyn’s to Make up for Missing Thanksgiving »

Tin roof store front
Perhaps I’m just a sucker for advertisements. But the truth of the matter is, every time I see the Tin Roof’s billboard with an elaborately designed red couch, I drool. Home d√©cor has a very soft spot in my heart, and leaves an ultimate hole in my pocket. Needless to say, I finally visited the couches’ home. The nicest thing about visiting the tin roof was I knew I couldn’t afford anything; I was simply there for inspiration.
The Tin Roof, located on 1727 Sprague Avenue is home furnishings and d√©cor boutique. When I use the word boutique very seriously, as the store’s merchandize is as beautiful and unique as it can be expensive! But there’s something about the merchandize that keeps brining people back. In 2008 the store was voted Spokane’s best furniture store by three local magazines. Read the rest of Visit Spokane’s #1 furniture store the tin roof »
